Fantasy

Fantasy is grounded in reality and allows us to explore our roots. Scottish legends and world mythology are a rich source of inspiration. I'm fascinated by stories and objects that retain their mystery, like the Brahn Seer and Pictish stone monuments, whose symbols and meanings we can only imagine.

I enjoy finding the fantastical in everyday things like clouds, rocks, tree bark or found objects. My drawings often begin in an inuitive way; a pinched piece of plasticiene brings a new character to life or a shredded piece of plastic in the river at low tide becomes dragon's wings.

During lockdown I experimented with mixed media and ink, using freeform mark marking to create many different sheets of material. Out of these, new creatures and characters announced themselves.
